The only rule is to let the carved face sit close to the body, where fingers will occasionally find it and be reminded that jewellery is meant to be handled.

As a gift, a cameo is unlike a plain stone or a diamond because it carries a face. You might choose a profile that echoes a family feature, a beloved pet, or simply a woman whose expression somehow reflects the person who will wear it. Many worthwhile cameos are antique or vintage, their ivory-toned reliefs slightly mellowed with age, and they make an intimate gift for a milestone birthday or an anniversary.
